So, I've seen alot of articles about lower calorie items on menus for chain restaurants as well as fast food. This article called "Starbucks to debut lower-calorie items" is one of them.
On January 7,2010, Molly Gise announced Starbucks' new line of low calorie paninis and snacks. These paninis are said to have 400 calories or less, and the snacks which include brands like KIND bars, Annie's snacks and Stretch Island Fruit Company, will be 220 calories or less.
These paninis will be available in 4,200 locations and the snacks are available at multiple participating locations.
New low calorie beverages are also going to be new on the Starbucks menu. I usually get the skinny lattes at Starbucks, but I am excited to see that they are adding a Skinny Cinnamon Dulce Latte as well as a Skinny Vanilla latte; both of which for a size "tall" have only 90 calories!
I am happy to see that many chains and fast food restaurants are turning to healthier options. It is hard to be on the go and find something some what nutritional and low-calorie to grab. Hopefully the Starbucks near our school will have these new additions to their menu!

This could be a great idea only in certain locations. For our New England area Dunkin Donuts is much more popular but on the West Coast and New York Starbucks are on ever corner. An average work day usaual has a break for a coffee and something to eat and when consumers are offered delicious and healthy choices they are bound to choos them. This is especially a great idea with New Years and everyone trying to lose weight.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Vanessa and Laura. I think that the topic of this article is one that is going to be HUGE in the year 2010. Over the past few years it seems that consumers have been extra aware of what they eat and how it could affect their body. I think that with the year being 2010, a lot of people are going to make different choices about what they eat because it is a new year and finally...or dreadfully, 2010.
ReplyDeleteNew choices at fast food restaurant chains and quick fixes like Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Tim Hortons, and Honey Dew, will attract people in different ways then their money can buy. Hopefully people will notice that sometimes it's better for them to choose a lower calorie menu item over a less expensive one, if that be the deciding factor for them.
It's great to read that Starbucks is pushing out a more health friendly menu. I personal love Starbucks and usually go with one of the Vinti drinks which contain more than 500 calories. Although these drinks are addictive it's good to know that they have revamped some of their signature drinks to be more healthy. The Egg white with turkey bacon and chhese is my favorite, when I combine this with a drink I'm getting more than enoough calories for the day.
ReplyDeleteI feel like this push for a healthier menu in Starbucks will only aid to its success. American being one of the most unhealthy nations people love to eat and drink healthier tasty food and drinks. I think this idea would work in all Starbucks!

I also am glad to hear that more and more quick service restaurants are starting to be health cautious. Millions of people eat fast food everyday whether it be a small snack or a complete meal, and these small snacks and big meals have a big impact on our bodies health. If this new trend of being cautious about calorie intake really takes off, i feel that not only will the quick service places will care about health, but the people that eat there will also start to take their health into consideration and we may start to see a healthier society.
