College Eating and Fitness 101

http://www.youngwomenshealth.org/college101.html

Hello all,

So this article I found will really make you think. It is an awesome guide for freshman so they know how to stay healthy during there first few months of school. At least until they get into a groove of things. Dinning halls are like heaven. All you can eat and its already payed for, well at least for the first four years until those wonderful loans come. Some of there information is pretty obvious but its good because sometimes you might need a reminder. It also has a great chart for you. It lets you know what a healthier option is than french fries for instance. Most of the time your freshman year you are hanging in the dorm. It gives great snacks to have for when you get hungry and need a break for that 15 page paper due tomorrow. My favorite part is that they point out that there are more ways to get to class than driving. For us being a city it would be walking to the bus stop whether it is the trolley, RIPTA or the school bus. Then getting off to walk a few blocks to class. When I say it makes you think I mean for us seniors we need to think did we practice these healthy habits? If not, this article can even help us when we get out of this horrible place we call school. For my fellow junior you still have a year to get your mind, body and soul into a healthy lifestyle.

Just saying how it is,
Vanessa

  1. This article is great! I've never seen something so spread out and directed to college students. And like you said, Vanessa, this article could even benefit college graduates!

I like how it offers foods to try instead of unhealthy, high fat content foods in the dining room on campus. It also breaks down the food guide pyramid to make it a little easier to read, plus the benefits are listed for each food group. The "dorm room remedies" are great for incoming freshman who don't know what to stock up on that won't put too much strain on their body in between meals.
I like the top 5 healthy eating tips too. They are really something I think all college students should be aware of because I know I went through a stage of very unbalanced meals and portion sizes!
This article also included some ways to bring fitness into your college life. Like Vanessa said, with JWU students living in the city, we don't always consider all of our options on how to get to school. The majority of students drive, as I do, and I know if I lived in walking or biking distance, I definitely would take advantage of that!

It's difficult to transition from a pattern or routine we are used to and this article is a great helpful reminder for people at all ages!

  2. Im really happy you found this article! I wish I read this my freshman year and prepared myself for the weight gain from college dining halls. The layout of the website was alot better to read and stay interested. I loved that it gave alternate options of food to replace the calorie packed ones. I also liked the exercize ideas. It makes me want the warm weather to come so I could go for a walk with friends to gossip instead of gossiping with food and alcohol.

Its really hard for freshman as well as the other grades to eat healthier as well as get exercize. I was stuffed in dorms for 2 years and never had the energy to go outside to exercize. It was also harder and more expensive to have healthy food in the dorms. I remember those tiny refridgerators we were provided with and were expected to share it with 3 other students.

This article is perfect for freshman to have some knowledge on how to stay healthy. It would have been a better article if it mentioned the different alcohol options with their calorie counts. It would be a huge eye opener for students to see how many calories they consume on a night out.

    Great article vmac!
