Hey guys, I found this article about Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack pushing schools to change their ways in order to create a better tomorrow for healthier kids. Many schools are planning to remove vending machines filled with sugary or salty snacks as well as offering healthier a la carte items for lunch. Some schools also plan on offering breakfast. A huge problem is kids coming to class without breakfast and either falling asleep or having problems concentrating. The administration also addresses that they wish to create programs to better educate students in nutrition
I think that this article did not really explain a definite plan, which schools will be changing as well as when this plan will take place.

I think this article is really focusing in on a topic that is huge in today's society. It is long over-due that schools need better nutrition and knowledge about what children eat.
ReplyDeleteI idea of serving breakfast is great too. My high school did that a few days a week during my senior year and I think it really impacts the learning ability of students. Teenagers really need the extra push and exposure to what is going on with their bodies during those years of their lives. It is the administrations responsibility to put out that knowledge to every student.
This article mentioned that the First Lady Michelle Obama would be launching a campaign against childhood obesity on Tuesday. I like how the First Lady is making more of a contribution to the nation and it's issues. Hopefully this will encourage more people to stand up for what they believe in and make a difference in this world!
It's funny reading this article because it brings back memories. When I was in high school many of our vending macheines were being replaced from soda machines to juice and water machines. When we got back from vacation everyone was upset about the new changes. We did learn to find our favorite flavors of the juice and began to get used to it.
ReplyDeleteNow when I look back I wish my high school would have done something sooner. The schools replacing the machines didn't take away from their profit, if there is something there kids will buy it.
This article was ok. I like how finally someone is realize that our kids need help in becoming and staying healthy and they are now acting out. Who better than the first lady herself. I think it will stir up a lot of controversy due to what about the kids who are not overweight and want a candy bar for a quick snack, or who like to have a can of soda with their lunch. It will most likely take some time for this to actually become in effect or for someone to act on it.
